Tucson Chamber Artists Premiere Recording

Of Soul and Senses

Tucson Chamber Artists is pleased to have released its first professional recording, 'of Soul and Senses,' on Saturday, October 27. The album features sacred and secular music of the English, German, and American traditions spanning the last 100 years. In addition to TCA's professional choral artists, the album includes organist Jeffrey Campbell, pianist Miroslava Panayotova, and TSO principal oboist, Lindabeth Binkley. Composers include Benjamin Britten, Herbert Howells, John Rutter, Johannes Brahms, Daniel Pinkham, Norman Dello Joio, and David Dickau.

The central work, and the embodiment of the album's title, is Pinkham's Wedding Cantata. The four-movement work utilizes provocative texts from Song of Solomon of the Old Testament, set to equally sensuous music by one of America's great composers of the last century. Artwork for the album's cover, titled Song of Solomon, colorfully depicts the stirring and sometimes controversial book in the Bible, in which two lovers allegorically represent God and his love for his people. He Qi, who generously donated the use of his piece for the album, was the first among mainland Chinese to earn a Ph.D. in religious art after the Cultural Revolution. He won the 20th Century Achievement Award in the field of religious art theory and Christian art creation from the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England. His gallery is located in Stillwater, MN, and can be viewed online at: www.heqigallery.com .
