The word "concertmaster" conjures up the image of a distinguished grey-haired figure in tails.
Steven Moeckel breaks the mold. Since he joined the Tucson Symphony as concertmaster in 2002,
listeners of all ages and from all walks of life have been captivated by the tall young man
in the red shirt, playing everything from the profound phrases of Beethoven to Do You Know
What It Means to Miss New Orleans?
Steven studied violin at the legendary Mozarteum in Salzburg. After graduating with honors at age 19, he assumed the position of co-concertmaster of Germany’s Ulm Philharmonic where he remained for three seasons before returning to the United States for further study at Indiana University with the distinguished American violinist Miriam Freed.
During his tenure with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Steven has become an audience favorite for his incomparably sensitive and elegant playing. At age 28, he is an internationally-acclaimed violinist and has appeared as soloist with orchestras in America and throughout Europe.
As a chamber musician, he has appeared at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago, and performed in Europe as violinist of the Makart Trio Salzburg and as first violinist with the Auraeus Quartet. He performs with the Painted Sky Festival in northern Arizona and is founder of the local chamber group, Ensemble Amabile.
In November 2005, Steven Moeckel was the only American to receive an award at the Sibelius Competition in Helsinki, Finland. In August 2006, Steven was among the winners of a "40 under 40" award from Tucson Business Edge magazine, for contributions to the betterment of the Tucson area.
The greater Tucson area is fortunate to have one of the finest young violin talents in its midst. Moeckel can truly be considered a Tucson Treasure.
