Bach Society concert to feature Tucson Chamber Artists
St. Andrew's Bach Society will host members of the Tucson Chamber Artists on Sunday in a concert titled "The Power of 8."
The concert, part of the society's summer recital series, includes
sacred works by Brahms, Bach and Britten. Some highlights include
Johannes Brahms' seldom-heard motet, Geistliches Lied, Op. 30; and
"Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit," one of J.S. Bach's earliest
cantatas — two works whose sunny tones defy their intention as funeral
pieces.
A likely highlight of the afternoon could come with Benjamin
Britten's "Rejoice in the Lamb," a work more famous for Christopher
Smart's text than Britten's music. It's based on a poem Smart wrote
while he was in an insane asylum, and there's delicious evidence of his
madness throughout, including referring to his cat Jeoffrey as "a
servant of the living God" and calling a mouse a "creature of great
personal valour."
Sunday's concert begins at 3 p.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal
Church, 545 S. Fifth Ave. Tickets are $10 adults, $5 students at the
door, and seating is limited to 125 people. For further details, call
323-2771.
