Tucson Chamber Artists to salute monarchs
Music fit for royalty.
That was Eric Holtan's goal when he programmed the Tucson Chamber
Artists spring concert, "Music Fit for a King . . . and Queen: A Choral
Music Tribute to Famous Monarchs."
His idea is that in the first half, the 3-year-old professional
chorus will wax on about kings. In the second half, queens get their
say.
Some of the sacred and secular kingly works include "Pastime With
Good Company," Jean-Philippe Rameau's "Laboravi Clamans," Orlando
Gibbons' "Hosanna to the Son of David" and Benjamin Britten's "Rejoice
in the Lamb."
On to the queens: William Turner's "The Queen Shall Rejoice,"
Liszt's "Salve Regina" and "All Creatures Now Are Merry-minded," which
was often referred to as "Fair Oriana."
The concert's finale will be the heart-tugging farewell lament to
a queen-in-the-wings we all can relate to: Princess Diana. To mark the
10th anniversary of her death, the chorus will sing John Taverner's
"Song for Athene," which was sung at Diana's funeral in September 1997.
The concert closes out the Tucson Chamber Artists' 2006-2007
season. Performances are at 8 p.m. today at Rincon Congregational
Church, 122 N. Craycroft Road; and 3 p.m. Sunday at Beautiful Savior
Lutheran Church, 7570 N. Thornydale Road. Tickets are $15; $8 for
students. 401-2651.
